A vehicle was trapped under a tractor-trailer and burning when emergency crews arrived at Ga. 316 and Buford Drive, authorities said.

One person was killed and 17 more, including several children, were injured Monday in a fiery, multi-vehicle crash on Ga. 316 in Lawrenceville.

The crash happened at about 3:45 p.m. at the intersection with Buford Drive, Gwinnett County emergency officials said. A total of eight vehicles were involved.

When fire crews arrived, one vehicle was underneath a tractor-trailer and engulfed in flames, according to Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge. The driver of that vehicle was killed, Rutledge said.

Seventeen people — nine adults and eight children — were injured in the wreck, which was in the highway’s eastbound lanes. Nine of them were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta-Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.

Two of the adults were considered to be in critical condition, Rutledge said. Eight people were evaluated at the scene for minor injuries and released.

The accident, which shut down traffic throughout rush hour, remained under investigation by the Lawrenceville Police Department late Monday. Police were diverting traffic from the area.
