I love this story in the book of Daniel about his three friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. It is called The Three B’s.
It begins like this…….
1) Don’t Bow
A while back there were 3 Jewish guys, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego who had gained favor from King Nebuchadnezzar by way of Daniel. They were set over the affairs of the province of Babylon. During this time the King made a giant statue gold of himself and dictated everyone to bow before it, during its dedication and if they didn’t it could become problematic [Whoever does not fall down and worship will that same hour be thrown into the midst of a furnace of blazing fire. Daniel 3:6]. Well, being Jewish, these three boys were not going to do that, their allegiance was to their sovereign G_d, the creator of all things. So surprisingly one of the Nebuchadnezzar’s men saw that the boys didn’t bow down and came to inform the King. Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar ordered Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego to be summoned to his office. When the King asked if it was true, they all answered “yes”.
2) Don’t Bend
By now Nebuchadnezzar was just fuming, but he wanted to give the boys another opportunity to correct their misdeeds. So, he said listen, I have an idea. Why don’t you just bow down right here. No one will see you except me and I will won’t say anything but will know that you did. The boys asked for a minute and they huddled up to discuss this gracious offer. When they finished, they told Nebuchadnezzar thank you but no thank you, letting him know that their G_d would save them from the fire.
Nebuchadnezzar was so angry he just about blew an artery. Calling his guards to seize the boys and turn up the heat 7 times hotter than normal. So, his men tied up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego and threw them into the furnace of blazing fire. It was so hot the guard that pushed them in actually burned up.
3) Don’t Burn
Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and shouted out, “Didn’t we throw three men bound into the middle of the fire?” The priests said “yes”. Then Nebuchadnezzar approached the door of the furnace and yelled, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego, servants of the Most High G_d, come out and come here!” After seeing that NO harm came of them, Nebuchadnezzar praised the G_d of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego. Acknowledging the One who has sent His angel and delivered His servants who trusted in Him!” He then followed up with another decree saying no one could say anything bad about their G_d or they would be torn limb from limb. Nebuchadnezzar worshiped the G_d of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego from then on.
