Snellville Elections

This Election is More Important Than You May Think

It will decide if the Snellville City Council continues to operate for the benefit of city residents or if the council spends a lot of its time dealing with outside influence and the negative publicity that is sure to follow.

You can vote at Snellville City Hall through Friday March 15th between 8:30 and 4:30 this week or next Tuesday (3/19) between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. If you don’t live in the city limits, tell your friends who do to make sure they vote.

The Snellville Times is endorsing Tod Warner and we’re asking you to make sure you vote. Tod has served the city since 2003 as Chairman of the Planning Commission, a member of the Devekopment Authority of Snellville and the Urban Redevelopment Agency. He was also a city council member from 2007-2011. He did not run for reelection because he had started a new business and was concerned that time conflicts would interfere with his ability to serve the city. He will bring  knowledge, experience and dedication to the Council.

His opponent has never lifted a finger to do anything to benefit the city,  Judging by what we have seen, his campaign seems completely focused on using Snellville as a tool for self promotion and future political hopes and dreams.

We think the choice here is clear. Tod Warner is the only candidate who has the best interests of Snellville at heart.

For another opinion, below is Kurt Schulz’s post on Facebook.

                                                                         BEWARE OF CAMPAIGN PLEDGES!

While out walking our dog Riley today, Gretchen Kline Schulz found a campaign card laying in the street from Tod Warner’s City Council opponent. I was just amazed, when I read it, with what he put under “My pledge to you”.

The first pledge was “Helping to fix our traffic problems”. I guess he thinks he has a magic wand? He wants alternate options, but won’t come out and say the obvious of what he is implying. He proposes no other solutions except for “alternate transit options”. Which are??? Just be aware of who some of his fund-raiser sponsors and supporters are: Hank Johnson, Gloria Butler, Jon Ossoff, etc. Facing the traffic problems head on, the city, county and state have been working together on real workable solutions and the end results are coming to fruition. The new 78/124 intersection is well under way. We have just opened a roundabout on a heavily used intersection on North Road with another to start next month at an even busier intersection on Ridgedale. And several other intersection upgrades are in the planning stages. Widening of 124 to Sugar Loaf Parkway is in the early planning stages. These are solutions that are monetarily feasible, and in our city and in our current time frame for construction. His “alternate transit options” are decades down the road, over a billion dollars in cost and do nothing substantive for our area of the county let alone our city.

His second pledge, “Creating greater opportunities for our youth” has me further baffled! City Council Member Cristy Lenski has created the Snellville Youth Commission which has involved the youth from our local high schools with many city functions, responsibilities and events. The city has created their own Shark Tank working with the schools, that has been highly successful and rewarding. Several students have come out of this program creating their own businesses. The Community Garden created by Council Member Gretchen Schulz and Mayor Barbara A. Bender has worked with surrounding schools creating raised bed planters and giving instructional classes on gardening. The city has been actively engaging and supporting the youth in our area for years.

His third promise is, “Creating a vibrant and inclusive Snellville”. The city and all its boards, commissions, organizations, etc. are constantly seeking volunteers to join with and serve the city and your fellow citizens. If you are willing and able, there are numerous opportunities to be part of the city’s umbrella of activities. Briscoe Park has made extensive upgrades in the past years to improve it drastically. There are a myriad of activities available for all ages. A new program especially for needy seniors will open later this month in the park’s community room. The senior center adjacent to City Hall is a very active group of older citizens. They also have a huge variety of programs from exercise classes to travel programs all over the country. The Community Garden has gardeners from beginners to full master gardeners. The Farmers’ Market which was created 10 years ago as a post retirement project by Gretchen Kline Schulz has turned into a gathering place for everyone including your kids and dogs on Saturday mornings with a wonderful selection of produce and other foods. Snellville Tourism And Trade, STAT, does everything from the Beach Blast to the Christmas Tree Lighting activities and parade, all the great concerts, Food Truck Friday, etc.,! The city is heavily involved with the Southeast Gwinnett Co-Op which provides food for over 700 needy families. Dave Emanuel, a city council member has created the Give Hunger The Boot campaign for the co-op, which has food donation boxes all over town. One vendor from the Farmers’ Market has donated over 5000 pounds of fresh vegetables to the co-op this past season alone. There is something for everyone and no one is excluded. This is just a partial list. There is so much more. SNELLVILLE CARES!

Yet with all these pledges Tod Warner‘s opponent offers no solutions as to what he will do to solve what he sees as problems. Words are cheap, positive action is the solution. This is exactly what the city has been doing. They have taken a proactive role in moving the city into the future through hard work, professional planning and implementation of these plans and ideas.

How anyone could put out a campaign flyer like this is beyond me. If you would give your allegiance to Snellville rather than your Atlanta buddies you might be able to see what is happening around you here in Snellville. It is a vibrant, inclusive city that has so many amenities to take advantage of. Where have you been for all these years that you have not seen any of this? That is why Tod Warner is your logical choice for this council seat. He has contributed so much to making Snellville a wonderful city for everyone. He has been a part of all the wonderful things that have happened in Snellville for the past years. Let him continue his dedication by giving him your vote on March 19th.

  1. Tod Warner is the best choice. He has been active in Snellville for years and not just on the Planning commision. He is committed to the welfare of the city and the community. and he is realistic. He has a good working relationship with many in the city and county government.
