Snellville Police Captain Set to Retire, Given Accolades

City officials said “goodbye” to 16-year police department veteran Capt. Carey Roberts Monday.
Roberts will retire from active duty June 30 and move with his family to the Savannah area to begin a new chapter in their lives.
The Mayor and Council honored Roberts with a proclamation at the regular council meeting Monday.

Roberts received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army serving with distinction and followed his military service by serving in civilian law enforcement with Georgia State University. He joined the Snellville Police Department in July of 2000 as a patrol officer. He was promoted to Captain in February of 2014.

Task Force officer, a motor officer, a field training officer, general instructor, firearms instructor, an investigator and a sergeant before being promoted to lieutenant in May of 2012. In that capacity, he served as the commander of the Special Operation Unit until his promotion to captain.
The captain was instrumental in the establishment, training and supervision of the city’s Special Response Team, participating and leading several operations for Snellville as well as Norcross.
Roberts helped form and commanded the SPD Honor Guard and assumed the duties of training officer, the professional responsibility component of the department; certification manager, commander of the criminal investigation division and supervisor of the city’s communications and records sections.
During his career, Roberts distinguished himself by winning two Medals of Valor. He was nominated for the Governor’s Public Safety Award for Acts of Heroism, received an award as part of the Public Safety Unit of the Year awarded by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, submitted award-winning entries into the Governor’s Challenge and received FBI commendations for meritorious service and numerous letters of commendation and merit.

Captain Roberts was often at the events on the Towne Green whether working or just hanging out, meeting new people and helping out.  He will be missed, Thank you for being such a positive influence for our Snellville Police Force Captain Roberts.
