I have heard a lot of people ask at different times around town, “What is there to do here in Snellville for those of us over 50?”  WHAT?  Are you sure you live in Snellville?  Oh my goodness friends, we have such a diverse variety of activities available to those of us who have grown up that you will be totally surprised.

Let’s start with the awesome activities that the Snellville Senior Center offers.  Have you checked out what they offer on a daily basis?  If you are fortunate enough to be retired, that beautiful facility has a myriad of activities year round.  Here are just a few of the August activities that I found in their Spotlight news letter:

  • Jazz Through the Years Class
  • Aerobics Classes
  • Pilates Classes
  • Zumba Classes
  • Bingo
  • Spanish Classes
  • Knitting , Crochet and Painting classes

Have you checked out the Snellville bowling alley?  There are leagues forming all the time.  What a great way to get your exercise, make new friends, and have a few laughs.  If you don’t want to join a sanctioned league, there is the Keenagers that bowl on Monday mornings and they are always looking for bowlers.

Do you enjoy painting?  Do you wish you could paint?  How about gathering a few friends and going to Masterpiece Mixer’s on Scenic Highway.  Walk in for the fun, and walk out with a masterpiece you can hang on your wall.  These are so much fun with a couple of friends or a group.  I hear you can arrange for an entire group to have a party.  You don’t even have to know how to paint, but when you are done you will be calling yourself an artist.

Do you know we have a community playhouse in Snellville?  Yes we do and they put on quality shows all year long.  The New London Theatre is in the New London Plaza off Henry Clower Boulevard, and Highway 78.  You can go to their website and check out their schedule of upcoming shows.  Quality actors and quality shows that will have you laughing, or crying or both.

Do you want to learn about your outstanding police force?  I cannot recommend this program enough;  The Snellville Citizens Police Academy.  When you see this program advertising new classes, I highly recommend signing up.  Not only do you learn about how our police force works, but you become a part of a concerned group of Snellville citizens who take our city seriously, and are an aid to our men and women in uniform.  I have never seen such a dedicated group of officers wanting to keep our city safe.  They volunteer their time to teach these classes and deserve our thanks ten times over.

When you graduate the Citizens Academy you are given the opportunity to join the Alumni association that does so much good for our police department.  It would take me a whole page to tell you what they have done to assist our police department.  Just know, you would be proud to be a part of this program as I am.

Of course the best place to see what is happening in our wonderful city is on the city website and in the wonderful magazine that we get at our homes once a quarter.  There is no limit to what we can do as senior adults in our great city of Snellville or in Gwinnett County for that matter.  We have a beautifully renovated park that is great for walking or just sitting on the swings and watching the birds and ducks in the lake, we have a wonderful city garden that is growing every year, the award winning Farmers Market in the summer months to truly enjoy on Saturday mornings, concerts and so much more.

Get involved in the many activities that Snellville has to offer.  Volunteer when you see the opportunity.  Snellville is famous for its dedicated volunteers.  Be a part of the excitement.  There is always room for more.

If you are aware of other activities that the over 50 fun bunch would enjoy, be sure and comment below so we can all add these activities to our list.  Let’s keep our home fires burning in Snellville, and show everyone that we are never going to stop growing up and playing hard.

  2. I agree with Laura Drake wholeheartedly. The folks at SE Gwinn CoOp Ministry have a heart that is unmatched and so infectious. Thank you Laura

  3. Another option would be volunteering! The Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry is always in need of volunteers who want to make a difference for local families. I love our senior volunteers as they bring with them a wealth of wisdom and life experience that is a blessing to others.

  4. What is the age requirement for the senior center? I’m at the low end of the 50’s and not sure if I can become a member?
